After Dallas Wiens was horribly burned by a high-voltage electrical line, he was unconscious for three months before finally waking up and feeling his face. Now, after receiving a new nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves from an anonymous donor in the first full face transplant to be performed in America, Dallas has hailed his newly regained sense of smell as one of the top benefits of the surgery.

Dallas who was also left blinded after the accident, underwent a 15 hour facial transplant procedure in March at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Mr Wiens’ doctors said that although he had yet to recover full nerve and muscle function, they were confident he would improve.
